Wednesday 24th February is the day earmarked for the cleaning of Manzanilla beach. This initiative comes in the wake of Carnival celebrations and is preparatory for the not-too-distant leatherback turtle nesting season starting next month. The clean-up is essential to remove debris from the beach area and inshore.
This situation is exacerbated during the Carnival season as there is an influx of campers and beachgoers who prefer to relax at the beach as an alternative to urban festivities. Volunteers from the Zoological Society of Trinidad and Tobago Inc., Wildlife Division (Forestry), CEPEP Company Ltd. and other environmental organizations will team up with the Manatee Conservation Trust to ensure the beach is suitable for nesting leatherback turtles.
