The Fatel Razak landed in Trinidad in 1845 after surviving the long, difficult journey from Calcutta with a human cargo of about 227 East Indian indentured labourers. The impact that the first arrival made on the economic, social and cultural traditions and influences are as diverse as the people it brought. Today people of Indian ancestry account for 42% of our population.
In remembrance of all those who made that first journey and subsequent journeys to our blessed and beautiful country of Trinidad, the Management and Staff of the Zoological Society of Trinidad & Tobago and the Emperor Valley Zoo paid respect and joined in the celebration of this historic occasion. This was commemorated on May 30, 2012 with a poster exhibition and short talks.
