Conservation is an integral part of the ZSTT’s mandate and it carries out this responsibility through:
  • Maintaining and breeding of endangered and threatened species, either for research or as stock and replenishment of the wild populations
  • Partnering with leading conservation groups both locally and internationally
Specific activities include the following:
  • Joint patrols with the Manatee Conservation Trust (MCT) and the Wildlife/Forestry Division of the Ministry of Agriculture, Land and Marine Resources in the protection of the nesting leatherback turtles and other marine turtles at Manzanilla Beach
  • Monitoring the re-introduction of the Blue and Gold Macaws into the Nariva Swamp in collaboration with Cincinnati Zoo, Forestry Division and the Manatee Conservation Trust
  • Patrols for the protection of the endangered West Indian Manatee
  • Non-invasive cetacean research in conjunction with IFAW and MCT
